The Devastating Reach of Swimming Pool Accidents: Drownings, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Spinal Cord Injuries, Quadriplegia and Other Catastrophic Injuries

by The Beasley Firm  |  May 25, 2011  |

As the Memorial Day holiday and official opening of the summer season is upon us, how can we not think about how enjoyable it will be to relax on a hot summer’s day in a swimming pool? I know I am already thinking about it. Many swimmers and pool members are well aware of the hazards of drowning. However, even more swimmers and pool members are not aware that a swimming pool or diving board can also cause catastrophic injuries that will forever alter a person’s life as well as the lives of family members.

Each year, there are thousands of pool members or swimmers who become victims of swimming pool or diving board accidents that cause spinal cord injuries, paraplegia, quadriplegia, traumatic brain injuries as well as many other catastrophic injuries. Since 1958, the experienced Philadelphia, PA swimming pool accident lawyers at The Beasley Firm have successfully represented clients and their families who have been catastrophically injured or killed in or around a swimming pool or diving board. Our experienced swimming pool accident team includes a swim club Board of Directors President and pool owners who are highly knowledgeable and experienced in all aspects of swimming pool and diving board safety.

Pool decks also pose potential risks. Pool decks that are dirty or slippery due to sun tan lotion, improperly surfaced or that have mold growth can cause a swimmer to slip and fall onto the concrete, therefore causing serious neck, back, spinal cord injuries or brain injuries. Swimming pool ladders and diving board ladders can also be slippery for the same reasons and cause the same life altering injuries. Three meter diving boards or the “high dive” pose even more of a hazard if the diver falls from a height onto the concrete below. Many diving boards are not prepared with the appropriate non-slip material at the end of the diving board, causing divers to slip off of the end of the board, striking their head against the diving board, which can lead to brain injury. In addition, many diving boards are not cleaned to remove the slippery suntan lotion that accumulates on the end of the diving board, causing a diver to slip off of the end of the board and suffer serious injuries.
