Walk into your local gas station or convenience store and you'll find no shortage of supplements advertising a multitude of health benefits. Often found near checkout counters, they may seem like convenient energy boosters or health enhancers, but they can pose unexpected dangers.
Neptune's Fix is a supplement that promotes itself as "happiness in a bottle" for its supposed mood-boosting and anti-anxiety properties. The product contains the antidepressant tianeptine, a potentially dangerous substance which is not approved by the FDA for medical use. The lack of regulatory oversight means users consume tianeptine without any medical guidance, further heightening the risks for significant or even fatal injuries.

Originally developed in the 1960s by French researchers, tianeptine was intended as an antidepressant with a unique mechanism of action compared to traditional SSRIs. While it is classified as an antidepressant in some countries, tianeptine is often misrepresented as a nootropic, or a drug that can be taken to enhance cognitive function. Its true affect on consumers more closely resembles that of an opioid. Recent studies suggest that tianeptine binds to and activates receptors in the brain which are typically associated with pain relief, euphoria, and addiction pathways.
Some of the reported dangers of misusing tianeptine include:
While tianeptine is banned in 9 states, it is still widely available in the Northeastern United States. In a six month period, the CDC highlighted twenty cases of severe tianeptine-related illnesses in the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System database.
In November 2023, the FDA issued a warning to consumers to not use or purchase any products containing tianeptine, including Neptune's Fix. Not long after in January 2024, the manufacturer for Neptunes Fix issued a voluntary recall of its products, including Neptune’s Fix Elixir, Neptune’s Fix Extra Strength Elixir and Neptune’s Fix Tablets. While Neptune's Fix may no longer be on store shelves, there are still many similar products on the market containing tianeptine, including brands such as "Pegasus," "Zaza Red," and "Tiannaa."
If you or a loved one sustained an injury from consuming Neptunes Fix, or other similar supplements containing tianeptine, it's crucial to understand your legal rights. The manufacturers and distributors of these products often fail to provide adequate warnings about the risks, or they market dangerous products as dietary supplements, bypassing regulatory scrutiny. This deceptive behavior could make them liable for damages.
