Motorcycle Accident Stats

by The Beasley Firm  |  March 18, 2020  |

Motorcycle accidents are some of the most devastating collisions you can experience. Far too many drivers and motorcyclists fail to operate in a manner that is safe for others on the road. However, when a collision occurs, it’s most often the motorcyclist who suffers the more damaging injuries.

It’s no wonder the stats regarding motorcycle accidents are so high. Unfortunately, with many people driving negligently, it’s easy to see why numbers continue to remain so high. We break down a few of the stats below.

Numbers on the Rise

According to the Insurance Information Institute, there were 5,306 fatal crashes involving motorcycles in 2007. Fast forward to 2016, and the numbers saw an increase to 5,421. It’s not a significant jump, but people are still suffering significant harm and fatal injuries because of these devastating crashes.

Much of the problem has to do with helmet use. The numbers fluctuate far too often despite most motorcyclists recognizing the need for proper safety equipment. In 2000, 71% of motorcyclists wore helmets. The number dropped to 54% in 2010 before rising again and reaching 71% in 2018.

Injury Rates

We know motorcycle accidents can have some of the most devastating repercussions. While injury rates have gone down, fatal injury rates have gone up. From 2007 to 2016, motorcyclist injuries dropped from 103,000 total injuries to 88,000.

However, fatal injuries went up from 5,174 in 2007 to 5,286 in 2016.

The numbers show a disturbing fact that motorcyclists often sustain some of the most damaging types of injuries, including permanent disability or death.
