Reading Hospital Ordered to Pay $1.3 Million

Reading Hospital has been ordered to pay $1.3 million to a woman who suffered serious injury after they failed to diagnose and treat a carotid dissection. As reported by the Reading Eagle, the woman went to the hospital in 2016 after experiencing stroke-like symptoms at home. The hospital had her complete a CT scan but did no further testing.

During the trial, attorney Jubb argued that the failure to do additional testing was a “deviation in the standard of care” since she was still experiencing neurological symptoms such as numbness and a headache. Further testing could have shown the carotid dissection.

As indicated in the article, the hospital’s failure to diagnose and treat the condition resulted in a blood clot being released and lodged in her brain. The clot caused an ischemic stroke, resulting in permanent injuries. Injuries included facial palsy, limitations in her left extremity, and a permanent change to her voice.
