How Does a TBI Affect a Victim’s Life?

by The Beasley Firm  |  December 7, 2017  |

When a person sustains a serious injury involving head trauma, it can cause long-term impacts. For anyone who may be suffering from a traumatic brain injury, there are various symptoms that may be experienced. At The Beasley Firm, our Philadelphia traumatic brain injury lawyers want individuals to understand the impacts of a TBI so they know what treatment — and potential legal — options they may have to help recover.

Classification of TBI

Depending on how severe a traumatic brain injury is, it can be classified in three different categories including mild, moderate, and severe. These are all serious, but with severe, it can be considered to be a fatal injury.

  • Mild TBI: A mild TBI often results in a brief loss of consciousness that usually lasts between a few seconds and a few minutes. There may be slight memory loss, but imaging results will appear normal.
  • Moderate TBI: Unconsciousness can last a bit longer, often exceeding an hour and memory loss may be more severe, including between 1 and 24 hours of the incident. Imaging will often show abnormal results.
  • Severe TBI: Unconsciousness can lead to coma and the victim will show abnormal brain imaging results. Memory loss can be much more severe. Other signs of severe TBI can include a vegetative state or minimal responses.

Whether a TBI is caused by a blow to the head or a lack of oxygen, it can result in difficulties with motor functions, as well as cognitive issues. This can include headaches, trouble thinking, memory loss, mood swings, deficits in attention, and more. When these are caused by negligence or the reckless actions of other parties, the victim may be able to seek compensation to help recover after the injury.

Our Philadelphia traumatic brain injury attorneys work hard to protect victims and get the results they deserve. From start to finish, we focus our efforts on holding negligent parties accountable for their actions. If you’ve been harmed, we’re here to help.
