Taylor Lewan, as reported by ESPN, is a three-time pro-bowl offensive tackle. He played in the NFL for nine seasons. He spent his entire career with the Tennessee Titans, who drafted him 11th overall in 2014.
Lewan was released earlier this year after reinjuring his right ACL. He originally tore his ACL in October 2020. Within weeks of the initial injury, famed orthopedist Dr. James Andrews performed surgery to repair his knee. The athlete, however, continued to struggle with the knee injury throughout the last three seasons of his career.
The left tackle alleges that the surgery performed by Dr. Andrews resulted in permanent damage that ultimately proved to be career-ending. Lewan accuses Dr. Andrews, Baptist Health Care, Baptist Medical Group, and Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine of negligence.
As explained by ESPN, the former pro athlete is suing Andrews for:
If successful, damages in the case are expected to exceed $50,000. The lawsuit was filed earlier this month in Escambia County, Florida. It is not the first time that Dr. Andrews has been accused of medical malpractice. Sports Illustrated notes that the Doctor was sued by former Minnesota Viking defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd.
Sports medicine is a specialized branch of health care that applies to athletes. Many professional athletes rely on experts in the field of sports medicine to help them recover from an injury quickly and return to playing. As with other forms of medicine, when a doctor fails to provide a reasonable standard of care, they may be held liable for medical malpractice.
Sports medicine medical malpractice occurs when a doctor, nurse, or healthcare provider acts negligently in the care and treatment of a patient. It is important to consult with an attorney to determine whether you might be eligible to file a claim based on medical malpractice.
