Even Experienced Swimmers Can Drown in a Swimming Pool Accident

by The Beasley Firm  |  June 8, 2011  |

No one really ever thinks twice about the chances of an experienced swimmer drowning in a pool, but sadly, it does happen. Many times, it is because the experienced swimmer broke his or her neck after diving into a pool and was unable to move their arms or legs to help them get to the surface for air before drowning.

Just today, an autopsy report showed that a Brownsville, Texas teen drowned after he broke his neck in an inflatable swimming pool. In 2008, 92Q DJ K-Swift died after she broke her neck after diving into a swimming pool. Other swimming pool accident lawsuits include a $5.2 million award to a young man who became a quadriplegic after diving into a hotel swimming pool, a $3.8 million award to a teen’s family after he died from injuries sustained in a hotel swimming pool, and a $2.6 million award for a 17 year old young man who suffered a broken neck after diving into a hotel pool.

The devastation of swimming pool injuries can be shocking for some people to learn. In 2010, a dance instructor and bride-to-be became paralyzed from the neck down after she was pushed into a swimming pool during her bachelorette party. The bride-to-be hit her head on the bottom of the pool, broke her neck, and was instantly rendering a quadriplegic. In an instant, she knew something was terribly wrong, but instead of panicking, she just let herself float to the surface and then asked her friends to call 911.

After three months in the hospital, the soon-to-be bride returned home where she and her finance dreamed of starting their life together as husband and wife. Sadly, she soon learned that if she got married, she would lose the Medicaid health insurance payments that were paying for all of her expensive and much needed treatments. To date, she is still his finance.
