Even Experienced Athletes Get Severe Or Life-Altering Injuries From Trampolines

by The Beasley Firm  |  April 20, 2012  |

Joba Chamberlain, the 26-year-old right-hander, New York Yankee pitcher, and professional baseball player, suffered a career-threatening ankle injury while jumping on a trampoline with his 5-year-old son. Just like many other consumers who buy trampolines for their children, he was probably unaware of the hidden dangers or injuries that can occur when more than one person is jumping on a trampoline at the same time. Sadly, there are so many other parents that are not aware of the hidden dangers trampolines pose. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 92, 000 people were seen in U.S. emergency rooms (ER’s) for trampoline-related injuries in 2010. Unfortunately, many trampoline manufacturers put profit ahead of safety and fail to alert consumers of these potential dangers.

While Joba was spending some fun time with his son, like many fathers do, he severely injured his ankle while on a trampoline. The injury was so severe that it caused the fractured ankle bone to protrude through his skin and cause excessive bleeding. Initially, there was so much blood loss that the paramedics were concerned for his life.

Dr. John Purvis, an orthopedic surgeon and American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons spokesperson, said in an Academy news release, “Although trampolines can be fun for both kids and adults, they pose a high risk for injuries, especially when two or more people jump at one time”.

Since trampoline injuries are a well known risk, why isn’t the trampoline manufacturer’s informing consumers of the risks before purchasing a trampoline for their child?
