Earl Bradley, a Former Philadelphia and Delaware Pediatrician, Faces Hundreds of Sexual Abuse on Children Charges

by The Beasley Firm  |  May 31, 2011  |

In February 2010, a Grand Jury indicted Bradley on 471 charges stemming from his alleged molestation, rape, sexual abuse, and exploitation of 103 pediatric patients. In April 2010, he was charged with an additional 58 incidents stemming from sexual abuse of an additional 24 child victims. According to court documents, the indictment included allegations that Bradley had forced children, some as young as 3 months old, to engage in oral sex and intercourse. Seized videotapes revealed sexual assaults where some of his victims “appeared to lose consciousness” and others where toddler victims appeared to be screaming and running away.

Dr. Earl Bradley graduated from Temple University School of Medicine in 1983 and performed his pediatric residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. He then began working as a pediatrician at Frankford-Torresdale Hospital, now known as Aria Health’s Torresdale Campus, in Northeast Philadelphia. In addition, he also had his own pediatric office a few blocks away in Morrell Park. In 1995, he abruptly moved himself and his office practice to Lewes Delaware. The move was so abrupt, it left many parents complaining that they were not notified that he was moving the practice or that appointments were cancelled.

His new Delaware BayBees Pediatric office was decorated with amusement rides and statues of childhood favorite characters such as Buzz Lightyear from Disney’s Toy Story and the Little Mermaid. It also had a small movie theatre that had Disney movies playing all day long.

It appears that in 1994, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital investigated a complaint of sexual misconduct on a patient by Bradley. There was a second similar complaint in 1995. According to local news stations, the hospital could not verify the claim and the records are sealed. It was around that time that Bradley closed up his Philadelphia practice and moved to Delaware where he began working at Beebe Medical Center. In 2004, Lynda Barnes, Bradley’s sister, who was Bradley’s office manager, reported him to the state medical society after hearing complaints from parents about inappropriate touching of their children by Bradley.

In 2005, police records show that a nurse reported Bradley for videotaping kids. Other physicians made complaints about how Bradley would perform long and unnecessary vaginal exams. At the time, The Attorney General’s office felt there was insufficient evidence to warrant prosecution. After a year long investigation, Bradley was arrested on December 16, 2009. Bradley was arraigned on March 24, 2010 and afforded a public defender. He pled not guilty to all charges. Beau Biden, son of Joseph Biden, the Vice President of the United States, announced that he would not seek election to his father’s former United States Senate seat because he wanted to fully pursue Bradley’s prosecution.

Bradley’s trial is set to start on Wednesday. Information about the trial is protected by a gag order issued by Judge William Carpenter Jr, preventing prosecutors, Bradley’s attorneys, and others from discussing the trial.
