Causes Part 2: Improper Use of Forceps

by The Beasley Firm  |  February 14, 2019  |

Many individuals are unsure of what exactly causes a birth injury. However, having knowledge of this can help if the need for a lawsuit ever arises. In part two of our causes series, we discuss how the improper use of forceps during delivery can cause serious harm.

How Can Forceps Be Dangerous?

Forceps are tong-like tools that are used to grip the head of the baby to help aid in the delivery process. They’re typically safe as long as they are used correctly, but there are also situations in which they can be dangerous to the baby when used improperly.

For instance, if the doctor applies too much pressure when using them, it can cause a skull fracture, hemorrhaging, or other damage to the baby’s brain. As a result, the baby may experience significant brain damage that can impact his or her developmental or cognitive abilities as they get older.

Forceps are not as widely used as they once were, however, there are still a number of issues that may arise when they are used and mothers may opt out of the use should they feel there is significant danger present to their baby.

Why Are Forceps Used In the First Place?

Forceps are not always used, but when they are, it’s typically because there is a potential issue involved in the delivery of the baby. For instance, if the baby’s shoulders are stuck behind the pelvic bone or the mother is having difficulty delivering the baby on her own.

The doctor has a number of tools at their disposal, so it’s important for them to ensure they are using the right tool, as well as using it properly. Failure to do so can be seen as negligence and if injury occurs, legal action may be taken against the responsible party.
