An Inexpensive Drain Cover Can Prevent A Child From Drowning In A Pool.

by The Beasley Firm  |  April 19, 2012  |

Now that the warmer weather is upon us, many will turn to swimming pools to help cool off during the summer months. Unfortunately, a fun day at the pool or a vacation can cause catastrophic injuries if proper pool safety precautions are not in place.

In December of 2008, the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act became effective requiring the installation of drain covers and safety vacuum release systems (SVRS), which can detect a blockage in the pool drain and immediately shut it off. However, many hotels, pool owners, private swim clubs, recreation centers, gym or sports clubs, resorts, camps, and water parks do not comply with this law and it leads to unnecessary drownings or death. The cost of repair to prevent a potential drowning or death is generally around $30 for small drains.

Without a proper drain cover or shut-off function, long hair, loose clothing, and body parts can be sucked into the drain, holding the child or swimmer under water and causing them to drown. Non-fatal submersion injuries can lead to a lack of oxygen to the brain, permanent brain damage, scalp damage, disembowelment and organ damage.
