Surgeon and Orthopedic Center Found Negligent in Care of NFL Player

A jury has found a surgeon and orthopedic center negligent in the treatment given to Philadelphia Eagles safety Chris Maragos. The former captain suffered a devastating knee injury in a 2017 game against the Carolina Panthers. Court documents indicate that substandard care may have put a “premature end” to his football career.

Attorneys Dion Rassias and Jill Johnston with The Beasley Firm secured the $43.5 million verdict on behalf of the Eagles captain. The experienced attorneys were able to show that the surgeon and orthopedic center were negligent in their care and treatment of Chris Maragos resulting in additional harm.

Multi-Million Verdict Awarded for Medical Malpractice

A $43.5 million verdict was handed down by a jury in the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas in a medical malpractice claim involving former NFL safety Chris Maragos. Maragos played for three teams throughout his 8-year tenure in the National Football League. During his time with the Seattle Seahawks, he won a Superbowl.

The last four years of his career were played with the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2017, Maragos suffered a debilitating knee injury that placed him on injured reserve for the remainder of the season. The injury eventually forced him to retire from football. Prior to his retirement, Maragos was named a captain of the Eagles’ squad.

Surgeon Found Negligent

The 2017 knee injury involved a meniscus tear which was treated by orthopedic surgeon James Bradley and Rothman Orthopaedics. Court documents indicate that the surgeon and orthopedic center were negligent in their failure to treat the tear. The injury would eventually be diagnosed as a “torn right knee posterior cruciate ligament” and would prove career-ending.

Maragos through his counsel, Dion Rassias and Jill Johnston of The Beasley Firm, successfully argued that the doctor and healthcare provider were not only negligent in their care of the NFL player, but also in their “decision to advance his rehabilitation from injury”

A jury found Bradley 67% negligent, ordering him to pay $29.2 million and Rothman Orthopaedics 33% negligent, ordering the center to pay $14.3 million. The decision could have implications for how NFL trainers and doctors treat game-related injuries.
